The journey to conferment of city status to Eldoret town recently entered a crucial stage after the setting up of an ad hoc committee.
One
of the key mandates of the committee is to draft a report on the status of the
town to be elevated to the city status.
Once
the report is complete, it will be forwarded to the Uasin Gishu County Assembly
for deliberations.
The
assembly will look at the report and later make a decision on whether to reject
or adopt it.

If
adopted, the report will be sent to the Senate and taken through the same
process.
In
the event the Senate adopts the report to confer Eldoret a city status, it will
be forwarded to the President, who is mandated to give a charter to a city – as
per the Urban and Cities Act.
The
ad hoc committee that has representation from various stakeholders among them the Institution of Surveyors of Kenya, the Kenya Institute of
Planners, the Architectural Association of Kenya, the Law Society of Kenya, the
association of urban areas and cities, the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce
and Industry as well as the Certified Public Accountants recently held a
meeting with Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor Daniel Chemno.
During the meeting, Chemno challenged the committee to hasten
the process so as to ensure Eldoet gets the city status as soon as possible.
He expressed optimism that the process will be complete by the end
of this year.
“We have complied with all the
requirements. We only expect government agencies to go through the report and
approve the elevation,” Chemno told Uasin Gishu News.
