5 Athletes Behind Major Buildings in Eldoret

Colloquially known as ‘Sisibo’, Eldoret is today ranked among the fastest-growing towns in Kenya.

As per the 2019 Kenya Population and Housing Census, Eldoret is the fifth most populated urban area in the country after Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, and Ruiru.

Eldoret’s population was 289,380 in the 2009 Census, and it has grown to 475,716 people according to the 2019 National Census.

The town, also known as the City of Champions, is now positioning itself to be the fifth city in Kenya, after Nakuru’s recent elevation.

Moses Kiptanui 


Moses Kiptanui is mostly famous for the 3,000 m steeplechase in which he was the number one ranked athlete from 1991 to 1995 and three-time IAAF World Champion.

He was also the first man ever to run 3000m steeplechase in under eight minutes.

Moses Tanui owns among others Utamaduni House and Komora Centre in Eldoret town.

Moses Tanui is a former Kenyan long-distance runner who won the gold medal over 10,000 meters at the 1991 World Championships in Athletics in Tokyo.

He owns GrandPri Hotel, which is named after winning IAAF Grand Prix races.

According to Moses Tanui, the hotel gives him “the memories of earning my first money in athletics.

Laban Rotich


Laban Rotich won the IAAF World Cup 1,500 meters final in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1998.

One of the most famous properties he owns in Eldoret is the Johannesburg Plaza – a building in the heart of Eldoret town that he established to pay tribute to the biggest win in his career which was the World cup final held in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Evans Cheruiyot

He owns Rotterdam Centre, a building he constricted after his victory in Rotterdam in 2007.

Evans Cheruiyot also owns rental houses in the outskirts of Eldoret town.

Fred Kiprop

Fred Kiprop is known for winning the Amsterdam marathon in the late 1990s.
