Moiben Member of Parliament Silas Tiren has called for the coming up of a policy that will outlaw subdivision of agricultural land.
Tiren says, there has been a worrying trend, especially in the North Rift region, where Agricultural land is now being subdivided, a move he says is a threat to the country’s food security. The North Rift region is considered Kenya’s food basket due to the high production of maize and wheat, but the legislator says with ongoing subdivisions of land to pave way for real estate, the country might not be able to have enough food.

He now wants a policy put in place where land classified as agricultural cannot be subdivided, even if sold to another person/entity.
“We need to identify land that will be classified as agricultural in that if someone wants to sell it, it can move to a different person without being subdivided,” said the MP who is vocal in addressing farmers’ issues.
According to the MP, Kenya currently still imports up to 20-30 percent of maize and 70 percent of wheat due to the deficit in local production, a situation he warns might be works – unless a policy to protect agricultural land is put in place.
Early this year, Agriculture experts had expressed concerns over farmers turning into real estate due to attractive returns in the sector.
Early this year, Agriculture experts had expressed concerns over farmers turning into real estate due to attractive returns in the sector.
The experts were worried over the rate at which agricultural farms near urban areas in the North Rift were being converted into commercial spaces – resulting in a decline in food production.
According to the annual crop development report by the Ministry of Agriculture, acreage under crop production in areas such as Eldoret, Kitale, Kapsabet and major trading centers has been declining due to changes in land use.
“Change of land use is posing a serious threat to food security in parts of Rift Valley as most farmers find it profitable to convert their agricultural land to either settlement or commercial,” stated the report.
According to the report, the Rift Valley region produced about 18.6 million bags of maize last year against a target of 24 million bags with a change of land user identified as one of the factors that contributed to the decline in production.

Land fragmentation leading to agriculturally uneconomical units and environmental degradation, as well as declining soil fertility, are other factors that have been cited as causes of the low yields.
