Committee Formed To Address Land Tenure Issues in Uasin Gishu

The County Government of Uasin Gishu has established a Land Management Committee that will be mandated to establish and provide solutions to a variety of land ownership issues within the county.

County’s Lands and Physical Planning Executive Eng. Nelson Maritim named land ownership tenures as one of the issues the committee will be addressing.

Eng. Maritim notes that issues to do with land tenure have been the main reason why they have failed to secure development projects for a number of informal urban areas within the county, including Langas.

"Eliminating poverty and boosting shared prosperity; increasing food security and facilitating urbanization and protecting the rights of minors and women all depend on secure land and property rights. For this reason, we have established a Land Management Committee that will help establish and provide solutions to such cases occurring in the county," said the CECM.

He spoke during a visit to Langas estate – in a move aimed at addressing land ownership issues that locals living in the area have been facing.

The matter, the CECM admitted, had denied locals access to major projects and ownership documents, especially for pieces of land located within Langas ward block 1, 2,3,4,5, and 6 and Yamumbi areas.

Eng. Maritim also noted that Langas, had in the past, been denied funding for several major projects due to court cases concerning land tenure and ownership in the area.

“Langas has always qualified international fundings due to its population but due to requirements to be met in land ownership and security, the area has always missed out,” said the County Executive.

Area Member of County Assembly (MCA) Francis Muiya on his part emphasized the need for residents to secure land tenure as a way to access government services.

"Insecure tenure and lack of up-to-date land records has a direct impact on financing and implementation of public infrastructure," Muiya said.
