Uasin Gishu County Executive Committee Member in charge of Finance and Economic Planning CPA Julius Ruto has expressed his undeterred interest in the making of the Eldoret Urban Economic Plan.

CPA Ruto has also termed the success of the plan as a dream come true to guide the growth of Eldoret town’s economy through identification of value chain opportunities, creating climate-resilient infrastructure and social inclusion. 

"As we prepare for city status, this is a program that will guide us to identify challenges in economic growth and the drivers that have enhanced our growth as a town. This is timely and we appreciate every input from the leadership and all our stakeholders.

Let's bring out all our potential growth areas to make our city livable, and a hub for trade, manufacturing and Agri-processing center," the CECM said while officiating the opening of the Sustainable Urban Economic Development Program (SUED) presentation of the draft report to the county leadership and the stakeholders. 

His Lands, Housing, Physical Planning, and Urban Development counterpart Eng Nelson Maritim on his part said that experts from Atkins, a British multinational engineering, design, planning, architectural design, project management, and consulting services company, had identified Central Business District (CBD), Eldoret Industrial Centre and the African Economic Zone as key potential development areas for Eldoret and the region.

 

"Key issues in identifying projects that spur our economy must address issues concerning climate resilience, inclusivity, resource efficiency, revenue generation and urbanization," said Eng. Maritim

CECM Education Joseph Kurgat and his counterpart from the department of Cooperatives – Esther Mutai, noted that emerging opportunities in the Jua Kali sector, bamboo and avocado processing can also help spur economic development not only in Eldoret town but also across the county, especially as the Uasin Gishu County Government is pushing for the agenda of asking farmers to embrace crop diversity.
