6 Common Types of Flooring Materials for Your Home

Whereas the roof is the first thing that people will notice in a house while outside, the type of floor is what will make it stand out for a person stepping in for the first time.

There are a variety of flooring materials available for those building a home which they can pick from – depending on your budget.

We take you through some of the common flooring materials, outlining the advantages and disadvantages of each of them – and at the end you will be able to make a decision on the best material for your house.

Vinyl flooring

If you’re working on a tight budget, Vinyl flooring is your best option because aside from being the most durable, it is cheap – compared to other flooring materials.

There is no maintenance needed due to its flexibility and hardness.

Ceramic tiles

This is arguably the most colourful type of flooring – with the ability to give the homeowner an option of choosing a colour, shape, texture, size and shape that they want.

Almost 8 to 9 out of 10 houses today have used ceramic tiles for flooring. They have a great appeal but the only disadvantage is that they are usually cold.

Hardwood flooring

Due to its durability and style, hardwood flooring has been among the dominant wooden flooring materials for those building a home for a while now.

This flooring material is made of wood from hardwood trees and its installation is very easy.

Advantages of having hardwood flooring are that it is easy to maintain – it requires only sweeping or cleaning using an approved wood cleaner – but never use water when cleaning it.

Bamboo flooring

This flooring material is perfect in modern houses – even though it can work on any kind of house style.

Bamboo flooring looks almost like hardwood flooring only that the materials are made from bamboo trees.

This type of floor is stylish, easy to maintain and water resistant – it only requires simple sweeping.

Laminate

If you cannot afford hardwood floor, laminate is your best bet – it looks almost the same as hardwood floor only that it will cost you cheap – not to mention that it is not made of hardwood.

The good thing about the laminate floor is that it can be designed to look like a number of popular flooring materials like ceramic tiles, real stone or concrete.

Stone flooring

If money is not an issue for you, then go for stone flooring as it is the most expensive type of flooring materials.

A stone flooring makes your house elegant and you will have a variety of stones to choose from – be it granite, marble, limestone or sandstones.

As much as stone flooring is expensive, it will service you longer than most of the common flooring materials.
