What is the first thing you notice in a house? Its not the kind of blocks/bricks used or its color but the roof.
A roof is definitely the part that will give your house a first impression to anybody looking at it.
Integral as it is, this can be the most expensive or cheapest part of the house - depending on the roofing design you will pick and materials you will use.
Here are some of the common cheap roofing designs in Kenya you can pick from for your housing project.
Gable Roof
This is the classic, most commonly used roof shape in areas with cold or temperate climates.
Gable Roof consists of two roof sections sloping in opposite directions and placed such that the highest, horizontal edges meet to form the roof ridge.
The design of this type of roof is achieved using rafters, roof trusses or purlins. The pitch of the roof and the height of the gutters can vary greatly.
Gable Roof are common among Kenyans because they are cheap and may be designed in many different ways.
This roof type is based on a simple design principle and it is more weather-resistant than flat roofs.
Flat Roof
A flat roof is a roof which is almost level in contrast to the many types of sloped roofs.
Flat roofs are an ancient form mostly used in arid climates and allow the roof space to be used as a living space or a living roof - also commonly found on commercial buildings throughout the world.
In warmer climates, where there is less rainfall and freezing is unlikely to occur, many flat roofs are simply built of masonry or concrete and this is good at keeping out the heat of the sun and cheap and easy to build where timber is not readily available.
These roofs are not suitable in areas where the roof could become saturated by rain and leak.
Flat roofs are characteristic of the Egyptian, Persian, and Arabian styles of architectures.
They are normally cheaper to install compared to pitched roofs and provide a lot more usable space either beneath the roof or above the roof where you can do a patio or a deck on top.
Flat roof are however more expensive to maintain because of drainage issues, giving the roof a shorter life span. They can also absorb a lot of heat - can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on the season. In cold weather, extra warmth is an advantage but in warm weather, it is a disadvantage.
Hipped Roof
A hip roof, hip-roof or hipped roof, is a type of roof where all sides slope downwards to the walls, usually with a fairly gentle slope.
Take note that a hipped roof house has no gables or other vertical sides to the roof.
Just like the gabled roof, the hipped roof easily drains, keeping it dry and they perform better in areas with strong winds and rain.
They can be constructed using almost any kind of roofing material such as clay tiles, metal sheets, shingles etc
Disadvantages of hipped roofs is that they are complex and require more materials to build. They also have more seams which becomes potential points of leakage when not properly installed - they may require more maintenance to prevent the issues mentioned from occurring.
Mansard Roof
This is a modified version of the hipped roof. It is used to create bigger usable attic space under the roof.
Mansard Roof is sometimes referred to as the curb roof or French roof. It has two different slopes on the four sides. The first slope is gentle and the second roof is very steep, almost vertical and it usually has dormer windows below the steep slope.
Just from the description, this roofs are complicated and expensive to build compared to all the above mentioned.
