From gun to tape, world records and more super human records in the athletics, a band of athletes have wasted millions of shillings on expensive alcohol, flashy lifestyle, designer clothing, cars and sex. However a good number have invested wisely.
Uasin Gishu County, the 'City of Champions' has seen great development owing to the top dollar athletes who reside and train, have heavily and wisely invested in highrise buildings and posh estates.
Most of the modern buildings owned by the athletes bear the names of cities and races around the globe that make them reminiscent of their victory.
From Rotterdam Centre and El Pariso Restaurant on the Iten Road. Then GrandPri, Johannesburg Plaza, Rieti House and Chicago centre in downtown, these international names of cities and major towns worldwide welcomes you to the 'City of Champions'.
In Eldoret town, there are at least 20 commercial buildings owned by athletes who either come from the North Rift region or have migrated from different parts of the country to invest in the town that is about to attain city status.
Below is a list of some of prolific athletes who have made their investments pay off fortunes.
KIPCHOGE KEINO
He is a pioneer athlete and Kenya's earliest winner of Olympic gold. Kip Keino as he is fondly referred to also boasts of having broken the 3,000m steeplechase world record in the past. After retiring he didn't fall off his athletics passion as he owns Kip Keino Sports House in Eldoret.
MOSES KIPTANUI
A three-time world champion in 3,000m steeplechase, the first man to run a sub eight minute in the 3000M steeplechase. He is also a former world record holder in the race.
He owns Komora Centre, Komora Gardens, Komora estate and Utamaduni House in Eldoret's Central Business District.
He also runs Tulin Supermarkets. Not only has he invested locally, he also owns Komora Estate in London.
MOSES TANUI
The two-time Boston Marathon champion, was the first man to break the 60 minute mark in half marathon in under one hour. Tanui is among the pioneer winners of IAAF Grand Prix races. He owns GrandPri building, in Eldoret. Tanui is also the chairman of the Eldoret City Marathon, the highest paying Kenyan marathon where winner bag Sh 3 Million in both the elite men and women races.
FRED KIPROP
The 1999 Amsterdam Marathon champion owns Kirem Arcade in Eldoret. The building houses K-Rep Bank, a Chinese Restaurant and executive offices in the town.
LORNAH KIPLAGAT
She has won numerous medals for Kenya, however she switched nationalities in 2003 and began running for the Netherlands.
She owns the High Altitude Training Centre (HATC) and the only private tartan track stadium the Lornah Kiplagat Stadium, Iten’s premier training facility where stars Mo Farah and Paula Radcliffe trained. The British Athletics hold winter training camps at Lornah's facility.
DAVID MARUS
Marus is a large scale dairy farmer and is among the top suppliers of milk in the region.
Other than his dairy farm, Marus has invested in residential properties in the town.
WILSON KIPSANG
Wilson Kipsang a former World Record holder also boasts as the first athlete to beat World record holder Eliud Kipchoge, winning the London Marathon.
Kipsang own the Keelu Resort in Iten. The luxurious hotel hosts foreign athletes who have come to train in the high altitudes of Iten.
LABAN ROTICH
Rotich holds the 1998 winner's medal the prestigious IAAF World Cup 1,500m final held in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Cited as his biggest wins.
He named his building in Eldoret's CBD Johannesburg Plaza in memoryof his win.
DANIEL KOMEN
The current holder of the 3000 metres indoor records. He has invested in Education as he owns the Potters House Academy a top performing private in Eldoret town.
