When building a home in Kenya, we have various types of architectural roofing designs to choose from. The popular ones are the gable roofs, Hipped-roofs, flat roofs and finally the skillion roofs. The features of these roofing designs are well explained below:
1. Gable Roofing design.

- Side-gable.
- Crossed-gable.
- Front-gable.
- Dutch-gable
Gable roofs can go with almost any type of material
such a metal, asphalt shingles etc. This is because they are versatile.
2. Hipped roofing style.
Hipped roofing design is another common roofing
styles in Kenya. It has slopes on four sides of the roof that come together at
the peak to form a ridge. Hipped roofing design is preferred by most Kenyans
due to its stability effect contributed by the inward slope of the four sides. This
makes it highly durable. Another advantage that hipped roofing design has over
the gable one is that it offers additional living space in the house (dormer).

Despite the fact that this type of roofing design
being durable, its installation is more expensive compared to gable
installation. Its complexity nature to build is another disadvantage that hipped
roofing design has.
Types
of hipped roofs include:
- Cross-hipped roof.
- Half-hipped roof.
- Simple-hipped roof.
3. Flat roofing style.
Initially, flat roofing design was mostly common in commercial buildings. Due to the modern architectural advancements, today, the roofing design is now becoming popular in residential areas.
Just as the name of the roofing design suggests, the roof is flat above the structure with a slight pitch to allow for drainage purposes and water shedding. Moreover, flat roofs offers extra outdoor living space. Thus, it comes in handy for townhouses with limited backyard space. Flat roofing design provides space to keep solar panels out of sight for homes that are energy-efficient. The major advantage of roofing type is that it is cheaper to construct than pitched roofing because it follows the natural structure of the home.

Unfortunately, flat roofs are more expensive to maintain due to the costs attached to roof repair and replacement. To add on that, this kind of roofing is easily susceptible to leakages hence making them become unstable for areas experiencing heavy rainfall.
4.Shed roofing/ Skillion roofing style.

Skillion roofing style is a common in modern architectural
designs and resembles half of gable roof with more pronounced slope. In other
words, shed roof or Skillion roof, is a single sloping roof attached to a
taller wall.
