Coccidiosis, Newcastle, Fowl pox and Infectious Coryza are the most common poultry diseases that affect poultry birds in Kenya.
1. Coccidiosis
Coccidiosis is a poultry disease that is very common
in poultry birds. This disease is caused by intracellular protozoan parasites
known as Coccidia. In Poultry,
Coccidiosis is transmitted through the droppings from infected chicken. Coccidia,
attaches itself in the poultry’s intestinal lining preventing the bird from
absorbing food nutrients into their body system. Incubation period of the
disease is between 4-8 days.
Symptoms of Coccidiosis.
- The most common symptom of Coccidiosis is presence of mucus or blood in chicken’s droppings.
- Blood located at the vent site of the bird
- Pale skin.
- Ruffled feathers.
- Low food and water consumption.

- Layers birds have inconsistency in laying eggs or even they fail to lay eggs completely.
- Diarrhea.
Treatment of Coccidiosis.
Good thing, Coccidiosis if noticed early, it can be
treated easily. To contain the Coccidiosis outbreak, treat each and every
chicken in the flock. Amprolium is the most common treatment of Coccidiosis. It
weakens the parasite’s ability to multiply.
How
is Amprolium administered to the chicken? Treatment is
administered to the poultry birds by adding Amprolium to their drinking. Occasionally,
medication is administered orally in instances where the birds are not eating
or drinking enough water.
2. Newcastle disease
Newcastle disease caused by para-myxo virus is a
poultry disease that is highly contagious. It is spread by direct contact with
the droppings or respiratory discharges of infected birds. The virus can live
for a long time in the environment
Symptoms of Newcastle disease.
- The symptoms can vary from mild to severe and they include;

- Twisted neck
- Greenish and watery diarrhea.
- Nasal discharge

Treatment of Newcastle disease.
There is no specific treatment for Newcastle disease
although, to prevent secondary infection. Isolate all the infected poultry
birds from the healthy ones. Afterwards, contact your vet immediately. To
prevent Newcastle form occurring, vaccine your birds after three months.
3. Fowl pox.
Fowl pox is caused by a virus called Avipox. This virus causes painful
sores in respiratory tract, digestive tract and the featherless skin. Infected
birds can spread it to other birds through wounds.
Symptoms of Fowl pox:
- Chickens develop white spots on their skin.
- Scabby sores on their combs.
- White ulcers in their mouth or trachea.
- For layers, they stop laying eggs.
- Difficulties in eating and breathing.
Treatment and management of fowl pox.
Prevent further spread by isolating the sick birds,
clean and disinfect drinkers, feeders and chicken house daily. Unfortunately,
there is no cure for fowl pox. Comfort therapy and preventive measures for
secondary infections can be given to affected birds. Glucose, tetracycline and
multivitamins can be administered in drinking water. To treat scabs, dilute
iodine solution and ointment every day until they get healed.
4. Infectious Coryza.
Hemophilus gallinarum is a bacterium that causes Infectious coryza. The disease affects the respiratory system of the bird. Poultry birds mostly get this disease through contaminated surfaces and water.
Symptoms of Infectious Coryza.
