A home is made up of various household surfaces that need to be cleaned properly and maintained regularly. These are; furniture, floor, mirrors and glasses, ceiling, painted walls just to mention but a few. In this article, we are going to focus on the two crucial surfaces which are; Painted walls and the floor surfaces.
A) CLEANING OF PAINTED WALLS
Below is a general way you can always use to clean your painted walls regardless of the type of paint used:
- Always start with the mildest cleaner and work your way up.
- Start by wiping stains/smudges with a damp cloth. Be careful not to scrub too hard and remove the color. If water doesn’t work use a mix of warm water and a mild dish-washing soap.
- Mix one cup of ammonia, half a cup of vinegar and a quarter cup of baking soda in a 20 litre bucket of warm water.
- Use a sponge and avoid applying too much pressure.
- Thereafter, dry the spot with a towel so as to remove water streaks. This method is recommended to remove stubborn stains such as ink, fingerprints and so on.
How to clean Latex-painted walls.
- Use warm water and a Non-abrasive all-purpose cleaner.
- Dip a clean sponge in the water, then wring it dry.
- Rub the wall gently paying special attention to areas that get touched often like, switches and door-knobs.
- Rinse the wall with another sponge and clean pure water. Do not to wet areas around light switches and other electrical connections. While scrubbing those spots, it is necessary to turn off electricity at the main switch.
- For stubborn spots, make a paste of baking soda and water and rub the area with a non-abrasive pad.
Clean oil-based painted walls the same way as the latex- painted ones. However, avoid using an all-purpose abrasive (cleaner). Chemicals can fade the color on your walls. Alternatively, use the following detergent solution.
- Stir 1 teaspoon of liquid dish detergent into a quart of warm water.
- Add 1/4 teaspoon of white vinegar.
- Leave the solution settle on stain for about 10-15 minutes before blotting.
B) CLEANING OF VARIOUS FLOOR SURFACES.
Cleaning of tiles( Porcelain and Ceramic tiles)
Ceramic and porcelain tiles are incredibly durable, and a few easy cleaning tips can keep these types of floors looking sparkling. Follow this simple process to clean ceramic and porcelain tile:
- Sweep or vacuum your tile floors regularly to keep them from getting dull.
- Clean tile with mild detergent and clean water using a rag or a floor mop rather than a sponge mop. Sponge mops tend to push dirty water into the grout lines, giving you a hard time to clean them. Don't forget to change water frequently while mopping.
- If your tiles look hazy even after cleaning, do away with the film using a homemade cleaner such as lemon juice.
- Immediately after washing, dry your floor with a clean piece of cloth.
- Begin by either sweeping or dusting the floors well.
- Make a cleaning mixture using 5 medium sized cups of warm water and a few drops of dish washing liquid soap.
- Mix the two gently to form a mixture.
- Proceed by mopping small portions at a time.
- Finalize by drying them with a clean cloth/ dry mop.
