HOME MANAGEMENT- HOW TO CLEAN DIFFERENT HOUSEHOLD SURFACES.

A home is made up of various household surfaces that need to be cleaned properly and maintained regularly. These are; furniture, floor, mirrors and glasses, ceiling, painted walls just to mention but a few. In this article, we are going to focus on the two crucial surfaces which are; Painted walls and the floor surfaces.

A) CLEANING OF PAINTED WALLS

Painted walls too just like any other household surfaces need to be cleaned properly too. Before you decide which way you will clean your painted walls it is important to consider the type of paint used on your walls. Is it Oil-based oil? Or  Latex-based? After identifying the paint type used on the walls, come up with the suitable way of cleaning a specific painted-wall type.

Below is a general way you can  always use to clean your painted walls regardless of the type of paint used:

  • Always start with the mildest cleaner and work your way up.
  • Start by wiping stains/smudges with a damp cloth. Be careful not to scrub too hard and remove the color. If water doesn’t work use a mix of warm water and a mild dish-washing soap.
  • Mix one cup of ammonia, half a cup of vinegar and a quarter cup of baking soda in a 20 litre bucket of warm water.
  • Use a sponge and avoid applying too much pressure.
  • Thereafter, dry the spot with a towel so as to remove water streaks. This method is recommended to remove stubborn stains such as ink, fingerprints and so on.

How to clean Latex-painted walls.

  • Use warm water and a Non-abrasive all-purpose cleaner
  • Dip a clean sponge in the water, then wring it dry.
  • Rub the wall gently paying special attention to areas that get touched often like, switches and door-knobs.
  • Rinse the wall with another sponge and clean pure water. Do not to wet areas around light switches and other electrical connections. While scrubbing those spots, it is necessary to turn off electricity at the main switch.
  • For stubborn spots, make a paste of baking soda and water and rub the area with a non-abrasive pad.
How to clean Oil-based paint walls.

Clean oil-based painted walls the same way as the latex- painted ones. However, avoid using an all-purpose abrasive (cleaner). Chemicals can fade the color on your walls. Alternatively, use the following detergent solution.

  1. Stir 1 teaspoon of liquid dish detergent into a quart of warm water.
  2. Add 1/4 teaspoon of white vinegar.
  3. Leave the solution settle on stain for about 10-15 minutes before blotting.

B) CLEANING OF VARIOUS FLOOR SURFACES.

In Kenya, we have 5 popular flooring types. They are; Tile flooring, Hardwood flooring,Vinyl flooring, Laminate flooring and Carpet flooring. These floor types are cleaned differently.

Cleaning of tiles( Porcelain and Ceramic tiles)

Ceramic and porcelain tiles are incredibly durable, and a few easy cleaning tips can keep these types of floors looking sparkling. Follow this simple process to clean ceramic and porcelain tile:

  1. Sweep or vacuum your tile floors regularly to keep them from getting dull.
  2. Clean tile with mild detergent and clean water using a rag or a floor mop rather than a sponge mop. Sponge mops tend to push dirty water into the grout lines, giving you a hard time to clean them. Don't forget to change water frequently while mopping.
  3. If your tiles look hazy even after cleaning, do away with the film using a homemade cleaner such as lemon juice.
  4. Immediately after washing, dry your floor with a clean piece of cloth.
Cleaning of Hardwood floor.

  1. Begin by either sweeping or dusting the floors well.
  2. Make a cleaning mixture using 5 medium sized cups of warm water and a few drops of dish washing liquid soap.
  3. Mix the two gently to form a mixture.
  4.  Proceed by mopping small portions at a time.
  5. Finalize by drying them with a clean cloth/ dry mop.

Cleaning of the remaining floor types and other surfaces shall be well discussed in our next article soon.

Surfaces in our homes require tender care and of course high maintenance. These surfaces are made of different materials such as wood, ceramic, concrete, porcelain etc and each surface ought to be cleaned appropriately. Therefore it is very important to know how to make them sparkle clean all the time. Are you looking for a house to rent or buy? How Women Can Protect Their Property Rights After Marriage

They say property has no gender, but history shows a different reality, where property ownership has favoured men. This inequality is still evident, especially when it comes to inheritance after the death of a spouse.  Even though Kenya’s 2010 Constitution guarantees equal rights for men and women, many women still struggle to secure their rights to property. So, how can women make sure their rights are respected after marriage? Baoriat Agencies explains six key ways to ensure fair property distribution in case of death or separation. 1. Registering Jointly Owned Property  When a couple buys property together, it’s important to register it under both names. This guarantees that the other automatically inherits the property if one partner dies. Make sure both names are clearly listed on the title deed as co-owners. 2. Joint Tenancy or Tenancy-in-Common There are two ways to share property: Joint tenancy : If one partner dies, the other automatically becomes the sole owner. Tena...
