How Locals Stand To Benefit from Eldoret City Status

Eldoret town has for a while now been working towards getting a charter to be the fifth city in Kenya after Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, and Nakuru that was recently approved to get the status by the Senate, and is only awaiting final approval from the President.

Already plans have been set in motion to see to it that all requirements are met, and sooner than later, Eldoret will be a city.

But how do you, as a local benefit from the city status?

City status comes with great advantages including increased funding from the Government hence the need to work on status immediately. With the guide of the Urban and Cities amendment act, and the law we shall get the city status soon,” Eldoret Municipal Manager Tito Koiyet was quoted by Business Daily.

Aside from getting more resources from the government, there are many more other benefits of this prestigious status.

Firstly, there will be a massive improvement in the housing sector, with the county government of Uasin Gishu already working on upgrading the current estates.

There are also ongoing efforts to ensure all residential estates within the town are connected to the sewerage system, with the Uasin Gishu County Executive Committee Member Mary Njogu revealing that they are working on connecting Langas estate to the Kipkenyo sewerage plant with Kipkorgot, and Kimumu also to benefit from the plan.

Roads will also be improved, and this is a benefit that many locals have started witnessing, with all major roads within Eldoret CBD now tarmacked, and backstreets rehabilitated – all in a bid to get the city status, and they will be even better once it is confirmed.

Aside from road improvements, there are also works ongoing for drainage systems, which means regular flooding within the CBD during heavy rains that affect businesses will be a thing of the past.

The city status will also open up new business opportunities for the transport industry, hotels and conferencing as well as tourism.

More investors will be yearning to expand to the town, and all this will bring direct and indirect benefits to the town dwellers.

For those in the buying and selling of land, and the general real estate industry, a city status for Eldoret will mean a rise in the cost of land/plots/houses.
