County Moves to Recover Grabbed Public Land in Eldoret and Its Environs

Newly established Land Management Committee (LMC) members have agreed to dig deep into the previous records, minutes, and all documentation to recover and carry out revocation, go forward to repossessing and reallocating public lands grabbed in Uasin Gishu County.

This follows concerns of unraveling land issues surrounding ownership and allocations of unregistered County Government Lands inherited from the defunct Local Authorities.

According to the Uasin Gishu County Executive Committee Member (CECM) in charge of Lands, Eng. Nelson Maritim, the time is ripe to ensure that government-owned parcels of land are brought back to their rightful owner.

"Formalization and regularization are key. Unfortunately, we have unscrupulous people who follow up on lands whose owners are deceased and manipulate records through forgery of the deceased signatures to falsely take the land from the family. To stop this, we need to come up with tough security measures and features on land documents, that cannot be manipulated at all," said Eng Maritim.

County Attorney Advocate Stephen Lel took the committee through the Land Act whose objective is to revise, consolidate and rationalize land laws.

"Securing and protecting vulnerable people's land rights is essential for bringing about a fair and prosperous county. It is key for combating poverty in communities and families especially when the registered landowner dies and the law plays a key role in ensuring that those dependents or rely on the land for food can access the property. Land rights are central to addressing inequalities, protecting the environment, and sustaining peace,” noted Lel.

The Committee discussed in length land leases and the lease conditions and agreed to maintain the subsequent existing timeliness of leaseholds, especially within the town and ensure that parcel blocks renew leases within the same period.

To ensure you don’t end up buying a grabbed land, that would later be reposed by the government, always follow due diligence. Never make payment before confirming ownership of the land – through doing a land search and having a physical site visit.

How Women Can Protect Their Property Rights After Marriage

They say property has no gender, but history shows a different reality, where property ownership has favoured men. This inequality is still evident, especially when it comes to inheritance after the death of a spouse.  Even though Kenya’s 2010 Constitution guarantees equal rights for men and women, many women still struggle to secure their rights to property. So, how can women make sure their rights are respected after marriage? Baoriat Agencies explains six key ways to ensure fair property distribution in case of death or separation. 1. Registering Jointly Owned Property  When a couple buys property together, it’s important to register it under both names. This guarantees that the other automatically inherits the property if one partner dies. Make sure both names are clearly listed on the title deed as co-owners. 2. Joint Tenancy or Tenancy-in-Common There are two ways to share property: Joint tenancy : If one partner dies, the other automatically becomes the sole owner. Tena...
