The County Government of Uasin Gishu is working on enhancing infrastructural development in several key urban centres as it seeks to have them elevated into a township status.
By attaining the Township status, the urban centres will benefit from among others supply of piped water, sewerage services, improved lighting as well as getting funding from government projects that usually support development of urban centres.
Speaking during a Planning Public Participation forum at Burnt Forest, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Landas, Housing, Physical Planning and Urban Development Eng. NelsoN Maritim said apart from Burnt Forest, they have also prioritized Cheramei and Moi’s Bridge as urban centres that need to be elevated to township status.

"We are underway with more projects to upgrade the townships through tarmacking of roads, keeping the towns clean, improving road networks and services as part of the conditions to meet Urban Support Funds requirements in the three urban centres," Eng. Maritim said.
He noted that soon, they will establish boundaries that will define Burnt Forest Township area through a gazette notice.
But the CECM noted that one of the key things that will need to be met for the urban centres to attain township status will be revenue collection where the urban areas must demonstrate their ability to get their own source of income.
Locals who spoke during the Planning Public Participation forum at Burnt Forest named water supply, title deeds, street lighting, market toilets, cemetery and a mortuary among the facilities the county need to work on and ensure they are able to access as soon as possible – even as plans continue for its elevation to a township.
“Survey works on road boundaries will begin immediately as we already have maps showing road reserves and service lanes,” said Roads CECM Eng. Gideon Birir.
Water and Environment CECM Mary Njogu revealed that the county had already acquired a 6-acre piece of land that will be used as a dumpsite.
She said tractor is already on the way to help enhance a speedy collection of solid waste within Burnt Forest area.
Among key areas the county seeks to enhance its revenue
collection in the urban areas seeking to get a township status is through
collection of parking fees, cess, and licencing of businesses.

“This is the only way we can get more infrastructures and services from the government,” noted Finance and Economic Planning CECM CPA Julius Ruto.
As Burnt Forest, Cheramei and Moi’s Bridge eye the township status, this offers an opportunity for the growth of real estate in the three areas.
With more businesses and investments likely to be directed to
those three urban areas, need for housing, hotels and entertainment joints will
be on the rise, opening up many more opportunities.
