Eldoret is
among the fastest growing towns in Kenya today. With a population of close to
half a million people, according to the 2019 census, Eldoret ranks as the fifth
most populated urban centre in Kenya after Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru and Ruiru.
Eldoret’s
growth is driven by the youth, and this has been witnessed with the emergence
of multiple colleges, university campuses as well as residential estates due to
the rising demand for houses.
Also known
as ‘Sisisbo’ or ‘64’, Eldoret has a rich history and was originally home to the
Afrikaners and white settlers.
Many of the names in this City of Champions like ‘Eldoret’ and ‘Uasin Gishu’ have origin to the Maasai Community who also used to stay in the county.
Today Eldoret
town has over 20 residential estates that stretch to as far as Kapseret,
Royalton, Chepkoilel, and Dukaa.
We take a
look at some of the oldest estates, the pioneers of this town:
Huruma
Located on the western side of Eldoret town, along the Eldoret-Malaba highway, Huruma estate remains among the biggest in town.
Its growth
can be credited to the opening of the Raiplywoods Company in 1973.

The estate
used to be home to hundreds of workers at the factory as well as many other
locals that were working in town.
Huruma
estate has since given birth to other estates like Maili Nne, Mwanzo among
others.
Langas
Langas
remains the most populated estate in Eldoret town. It is also the biggest
residential estate that has for long been associated with the low-income
earners in society.
Many of
casual workers in Eldoret town preferred to stay in this estate because of its
affordability – which still remains the case even to date.
As times move,
and a new era takes over, Langas has experienced some sort of facelift, with
modern houses coming up around the estate that is also expanding towards
Yamumbi.
Kipkaren
This is
another estate that was created thanks to a company opening up in town –
RIVATEX.
Many of the
workers at RIVATEX, opened in 1975 by the late President Daniel Moi, who was
then a Vice President used to stay at Kipkaren estate and others in Langas.

work or are students in Eldoret town.
West Indies
West Indies
estate was originally home to locals of the Indian origin. The estate still has
that nostalgic feeling of the old days, thanks to the old buildings – that have
a taste of the ancient Indian architecture.
There are a
number of modern buildings that are coming up around the estate which is home
to the upper-middle-class people.
Kapsoya
This is an
estate that was created as a result of a trial by the then Eldoret Municipality
in an attempt to come up with an excellent estate – which they almost succeeded.
Kapsoya is today
among the very few well-planned estates in Eldoret town.
With the
coming in of the devolved system of governance, the estate has witnessed a
massive facelift that has seen almost all its major roads tarmacked and street
lights installed.
