5 High-Value Crops You Can Grow In Uasin Gishu – Areas They Perform Better

Uasin Gishu is a county known for its rich agricultural soils. In Kenya, it is among the few counties that produce maize, wheat and milk in high quantities – ranking it among the country’s food basket.

Apart from the traditional farming – that is maize and wheat, there has been a slow but steady paradigm shift – with farmers now focusing on high-value crops, or rather cash crops.

With the fertile soils in Uasin Gishu, the county has a huge potential to be a top cash crop producing area.

Here are some of the top 5 cash crops you can grow in Uasin Gishu and end up earning you some good money;

Pyrethrum

Pyrethrum can only be cultivated under certain temperatures – lucky enough – the needed temperatures for this crop can be found in Kesses, Ainabkoi and Moiben sub-counties.

If you are a farmer in those three areas or you were looking to lease land for agricultural purposes in the three sub-counties, pyrethrum is your best bet for high returns.

Coffee

Traditionally, coffee does very well in high altitude areas – this is why farmers in Turbo, Ainabkoi, Soy and Kapseret are advised to plant it – it has guaranteed returns, not to mention ready market.

Hass Avocados

This is the newest cash crop in the market. The one major advantage of Hass Avocados is that they have a limitless market in Europe.

If you have a farm in any part of the six sub-counties, that is; Ainabkoi, Kapseret, Turbo, Kesses, Moiben and Soy, you are free to grow the Hass Avocados as the weather of Uasin Gishu perfectly fits into what they require to flourish.

Banana Tissue Culture

Bananas have quickly become an important cash crop of the semi-intensive medium-scale farmers, many of who today supply them to the urban market across the country.

Banana Tissue Culture can do very well in Turbo, Soy, Moiben and Kapseret Sub-Counties.

Macadamia

There has been a push from the Uasin Gishu county leadership for farmers to embrace macadamia as an alternative agriculture cash crop – this is due to its low input capital and high earning potential.

Macadamia is also a high drought resistance crop that you can plant in Turbo, Ainabkoi, Soy, Moiben and parts of Kesses Sub Counties.

Depending on where you live in Uasin Gishu and the size of your farm, consider picking one or two of the above listed cash crops and be sure – you won’t regret.
