SOCIAL AMENITIES IN ELDORET TOWN

Social amenities are places, buildings or infrastructural facilities which are meant to be shared and become convergence spots for the local and surrounding communities. The essence of these amenities is to facilitate the Public in conducting social functions and activities. Hence, it helps shaping a dynamic, harmonious, advanced, united and progressive society. In Kenya, a good number of these amenities are found in Eldoret Town. They include;

1.         Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.

The hospital is situated along Nandi Road in Eldoret Town, Uasin Gishu Count.It is a Public Hospital with a capacity of over 1000 beds. Today, the Hospital offers outpatient, inpatient, and specialized healthcare services. Besides the hospital serving residents of Uasin Gishu County, it also serves people from Western Kenya, parts of Eastern Uganda and Southern Sudan.

Being a level six Hospital, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital offers a range of services to the patients for example; Oncology services, Renal Medicine and services, Pediatric Surgery, Kidney Transplants, Neurosurgical operations, Specialized Orthopedics and Trauma, Cardiology, Pediatric and free Maternity Services etcetera.

2.       Eldoret International Airport.

This airport is located some 16 kilometres south from Eldoret Town on the Eldoret-Kisumu road. Eldoret International Airport was built with the vision of achieving accelerated economic growth, through integration and opening up of the Western region to local and international markets. The airport is also expected to promote the exploitation of the rich tourism circuit of Western Kenya, which is primarily unexploited. It was established in the year 1995 and currently it’s administered by the Kenya Airports Authority (K.A.A).

 

3.       University of Eldoret.

It is one of the public universities we have in Kenya and it is located  9 km along the Eldoret-Ziwa road in Eldoret town. It was founded in 1946 by the white settlers as a Large Scale Farmers Training Centre. The University made it a campus of Natural, Basic and Applied Science programs from 1990.

In August 2010, Former President Mwai Kibaki, through Legal Notice No. 125 of 13 August 2010 upgraded the campus into a University College with the name Chepkoilel University College. It was a Constituent College of Moi University. Upon the award of Charter by the President on March 2013, the University College was renamed University of Eldoret. On Friday 7 February 2013, the University added its first campus in Eldoret town housing School of Environmental studies Human Resource Business and management sciences Education (Arts)

4.        The Zion Mall.

  At the heart of Eldoret town, exists Zion Mall. The mall was established in the year 2011 and serves as a busy complex frequented by the residents of Eldoret town. It is based along the famous Uganda Road.

Some of the accessible services in this Mall include: the banking services offered by N.I.C Bank and Diamond Trust Bank, Tuskys supermarket services, Boutique and clothes shop services, Aga khan University Hospital Clinic services, Nova Hotels and many others.

5.       Sirikwa Hotel.
